"My name is Regan O'Connell and despite the fact that I'm one-hundred-and-thirty-two-years old, my family and friends treat me like a snit-throwing adolescent. When things get extra irritating, I escape to the solace of the eight-to-five workplace, where people pat me on the head and treat me like I'm twenty."
Synopsis
Regan O'Connell is a Wolfe, a secret agent, working for the Grey Brethren, a vampire syndicate. She is also a 20-something computer programmer slogging away in a Dilbertesque workplace. Thanks to a matchmaking coworker, her two worlds are about to collide.
For more than two thousand years, the Grey Brethren have existed in secrecy, accumulating wealth and knowledge. For just as long, the all-human organization, The Holders of the Light, have worked to contain and sometimes eliminate the influences of magical and supernatural creatures on Earth Plane.
Jason Lake, a Holder, has no way of knowing that the enchanting young woman sitting before him--his blind date--is a Wolfe. Nor does he know that 75 years ago, a Holder researcher murdered Regan's best friend. Now, as a wielder of the dangerous and outlawed magic--chaotic magic--threatens the Albuquerque area, both Jason and Regan are pulled together by a shared goal and a powerful attraction.
Regan's life keeps getting more complicated. Breas Montrose, vampire, former lover and sometimes friend, has moved into her house and refuses to pay rent. Regan's spy missions, masquerading as dates with Jason, are netting her information and uncharacteristic tweaks of conscience. And Regan's handicap, her inability to do conventional, spell speaking magic, will make the capture of a powerful chaotic magic user next-to-impossible.
